There is no magic brush—but the brush makes all the difference in the quality of your brushstrokes.  My favorite is the Black Gold 311, size 4 available at Daniel Smith.  Here are some of the brushes I use. You may choose to work with what you already have. I highly recommend that you buy your brushes from Daniel Smith, they are not expensive and much better quality that what you can buy in craft stores.

3/4” Daniel Smith 24-4 Cat’s Tongue
Lifting Brush—Synthetic Oil painting brush size 4.  Mine is the Blick Master Synthetic Size 12 from Dick Blick

Before you spend money on supplies...

If you do have supplies as listed here just bring whatever you have and we’ll make it work. The Basic Materials list below is a good start.  If you work with quality materials you will have a better experience.  Student grade materials are okay, but generally a waste of time and money.  When ordering from Daniel Smith please give them my Teacher Number TRP00206, if you are ordering online, just type it in the search section and it will come up on your invoice.  (the 0’s are all numbers) There is no charge, they give me points towards supplies.
Yes, you can bring a camera to demonstrations and workshops and take pictures for your own notes.

I love to buy paint, so my list is broken down into 2 parts.  The universal basic palette which I’ve found that will work in just about any class.  Then there’s my extra’s list that is always expanding. See Reid Palette above, it’s a great starter universal palette with Holbein paints included for only $40.
